Webinar Description:

Play therapists should be mindful of cultural considerations when integrating art-based interventions in the playroom. This includes applying cultural humility in respect to a client’s values and beliefs when working with clients from diverse backgrounds. This webinar will explore the importance of multicultural competence in artmaking in individual, group and family play therapy sessions. Participants will also explore the use of art-based interventions in play therapy with special populations like Indigenous cultures and incarcerated individuals. Experiential and self-reflective activities will allow participants to identify their “blind spots” in the playroom when integrating art-based interventions, including exploring cultural considerations in art materials. Additionally, participants will analyze the use of art-based interventions to promote social advocacy and justice in the playroom and beyond.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Identify diverse art materials to create culturally inclusive playrooms.

  2. Analyze art-based interventions to promote social advocacy in group play therapy.

  3. Discuss art-based interventions to develop cultural humility in medical play therapy.

  4. List cultural considerations in artmaking in play therapy sessions.

  5. Assess the use of artmaking in play therapy with children living in poverty.

  6. Explain multicultural art materials to integrate into play therapy sessions.
