Webinar Description:

Children and families come to play therapy with diverse cultures, identities and abilities. A core ethical component for a play therapist is to display cultural humility in their work with clients from all walks of life. But what exactly does that mean? This webinar will challenge the play therapist to evaluate the way they treat and view the behaviors of clients from diverse populations, such as children with medical conditions such as hearing impairment. Additionally, attendees will explore how bias presents in the playroom, using self-reflective activities, to allow professionals to identify and address cultural biases in play therapy sessions. Play therapists will be able to gain a deeper understanding of how to promote cultural inclusivity when working with children and families from diverse backgrounds.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Identify how bias may appear in the playroom.

  2. Discuss toys and materials to reduce bias in the playroom.

  3. List the components of a culturally competent play therapist.

  4. Assess play therapy seminal theories to use with children from diverse populations.

  5. Analyze important cultural considerations when setting up culturally inclusive playrooms.

  6. Describe steps to gain cultural competence in play therapy with diverse populations.
