Playful Pathways

At Vanguard Creative Wellness, we believe healing doesn't always have to happen through conversation alone. Through play therapy, expressive arts, and mindfulness-based interventions, we help children, adolescents, and adults explore emotions, navigate life's challenges, strengthen self-esteem, and develop healthier ways of coping.

Our approach combines creative expression with trauma-informed, culturally responsive care to create a supportive environment where clients can explore their experiences, build on their strengths, and reconnect with themselves. Whether navigating a difficult transition, processing grief, managing behavioral or emotional challenges, or working through the effects of trauma, clients are supported in ways that honor their unique identities, developmental needs, and lived experiences.

We strive to provide culturally responsive and affirming services that respect clients' racial and cultural identities, abilities, family backgrounds, and individual lived experiences.

Services are available for children ages 7 and older, adolescents, and adults. In-person sessions are available in California, with telehealth services available to eligible clients located in California, Missouri, North Carolina, and Louisiana, subject to applicable licensing and practice requirements.

Mosaic Art Creation

Our Approach to Creative Healing

We integrate a variety of play-based and expressive approaches to help clients communicate, process emotions, and develop practical skills for everyday life.

Play Therapy & Therapeutic Games

Play provides opportunities to explore feelings, practice new skills, and work through challenges in an engaging, developmentally appropriate way. Through therapeutic games, structured and non-structured activities, role plays, and other play-based interventions, clients can strengthen emotional awareness, problem-solving, communication, and coping skills.

Play-based approaches can be adapted for older children, adolescents, and adults to support self-discovery, relationship building, and personal growth.

Art-Based Interventions

Art offers a creative outlet for expressing experiences and emotions that may be difficult to put into words. Through drawing, painting, collage, and other art activities, clients can explore their identities, recognize personal strengths, process difficult experiences, and develop a more positive sense of self.

Sand Tray Therapy

Sand tray therapy uses sand and miniature figures to help clients represent their inner experiences, relationships, emotions, and life circumstances in a tangible, symbolic way. This approach can be especially helpful for clients who find verbal expression challenging or who prefer a more experiential way to explore sensitive topics.

Music-Based Interventions

Music can create opportunities for emotional expression, reflection, and connection. Through music listening, rhythm-based activities, songwriting, and other music-based interventions, clients can explore feelings, manage stress, identify personal strengths, and develop strategies for emotional regulation.

Mindfulness & Emotional Wellness

Mindfulness-based activities help clients develop awareness of their thoughts, emotions, and physical responses to stress. Through grounding exercises, breathing techniques, guided imagery, and sensory-based activities, clients can practice calming their bodies, managing overwhelming emotions, and responding to challenges with greater intention.

Issues We Address

Our play therapy and expressive wellness services can support clients experiencing a range of emotional, behavioral, and life challenges, including:

  • Self-esteem and identity: Building confidence, recognizing strengths, developing self-acceptance, and exploring personal, racial, and cultural identity.

  • Trauma and stressful experiences: Developing coping strategies, increasing emotional awareness, and processing difficult experiences at an individualized pace.

  • Grief and loss: Exploring feelings associated with death, separation, family changes, and other significant losses.

  • Behavioral challenges: Strengthening emotional regulation, frustration tolerance, problem-solving, communication, and healthy responses to challenging situations.

  • Depression and low mood: Supporting emotional expression, self-understanding, engagement in meaningful activities, and the development of coping strategies.

  • Anxiety and stress: Practicing grounding, relaxation, emotional awareness, and skills for navigating uncertainty and pressure.

  • Life transitions and relationships: Navigating family changes, peer relationships, school or work stress, and other transitions that affect emotional well-being.

Treatment goals are individualized to each client's needs, strengths, developmental level, and personal circumstances. Expressive approaches are incorporated into a clinical treatment plan when appropriate and are not a substitute for other indicated mental health interventions.
